Awful Din Feels Bad for You, But They Have Shit to Do
Awful Din has taken the traditional pop song and threw it out the window with their new single “petunias.” – and we’re here for it!
The new track from the Brooklyn outfit is full of cheerful resilience against the modern struggle of the every-day and has crafted a sound that warms the hearts of listeners with catchy riffs paired with lyrics that gnaw at self-worth, noting we are just as flawed as those who surround us. Between the twinkle and twang of thin guitars, comes words of encouragement that could easily be passed off as sage wisdom, all backed by the driving punch of rhythm the band has masterfully refined.
Lyrically, “petunias.” takes an acerbic look at the realities we face when dealing with mental health and the stress of navigating everyday life.,” said drummer Zach Rescignano. “But the sonic quality of the song was developed similarly to classical music with the idea taking precedent and the normal“ verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus” structure tossed aside.”
This freedom from structure allowed the band developed a song that encapsulated their identity: driving guitar, sardonic lyrics, booming gang vocals, and relentless drums. “‘petunias.’ is perfectly summed up by the lyrics “I feel bad for you, but I got shit to do” and shamelessly implies that people shouldn’t let the toxic patterns of others degrade them,” added Zach.
“petunias.” was recorded by Steve Roche from "Permanent Hearing Damage" in Philadelphia, PA, and the single art is Elena Barrio (@elenafarts).
