Amateur Hockey Club – “You Started A Fire”

Buffalo, NY’s Amateur Hockey Club is back with an oldie, but a goodie.

"You Started a Fire" is one of Amateur Hockey Club's oldest songs. It was the opening song of the first set we ever performed. Through lineup changes, they've continued to update the arrangement to suit the talents of the current members, but the song really crystalized when they entered the studio with our producer, RJ Demarco.

What had started as a riffy emo track with some southern-rock tendencies became heavier and heavier with each added guitar and vocal layer, and really nailing heavy tones and tight performances introduced some post-hardcore tendencies that elevated the whole track.

Lyrically, the song focuses on the collateral damage of a relationship that's not working, taking its members and those around them down with it. It touches on the short-fallings of a partner who's not all-in and may already be planning their exit, and another who is creating problems so that their partner can solve them and validate their mutual interest. "You started a fire and cried when I couldn't put it out."
